Carol and Gail and their Costumes, Volume 2

Mermaids

The 6th Annual Homer Ski for Women, February 1, 2009.
Sue Mauger came up with the mermaid theme, which was embraced by all.  Although Carol and Gail (Heineman) figured out the flowing ribbon hair and strategically placed starfish, this costume design was the result of contributions from many people.  Gail Radclife designed the tail, made crowns, and provided copious notes on mermaid ideas.  Robert Purcell, the first male to become a part of our costume construction crew, made the pattern for the tails and welded our tail frames from welding rod.
We were on the front page of the February 4th Homer Tribune and won first prize in the group costume contest.
But the best part was how all 17 of us looked swimmingly MAHVELOUS!

Gail and Helen tried to sew the tails Friday night.  For some unknown reason they did not complete their task.

We were grateful that Redoubt Volcano chose to just rumble and not erupt, and left the perfectly groomed snow unsullied.

Afterwards, we told our stories around a warm fire.  Chris Holdereid, in the purple dress, did a great job organizing the Homer Ski for Women, and we all thank her and admire her electric personality that shows so clearly in this photo.  Gail was wearing a nice new pair of warm winter socks, strategically placed, and they really lifted Gail's spirits.
